Mount Choke, Lake Tana, Community treks, Lalibela, Bati Market, Guassa Menz, WofWasha Forest, Awash Park

This is a low carbon tour that will take you through parts of Ethiopia no one sees. Part trekking, part road trip, we will introduce you to community led projects, forests and mountains. You  will have a chance to see much of Ethiopia’s endemic wildlife including the Ethiopian Wolf, Gelada Baboons, and many great raptors. You will see markets and churches – including the labyrinth of rockhewn churches that is Lalibela, a UNESCO world heritage site and one of the wonders of the world. You will travel on the surface, avoiding local flights and in the process seeing the Abyssinian landscapes unfold before your eyes. We have designed this trip to keep your carbon footprint to a minimum, with days of trekking without a vehicle and a minibus where it is feasible, but 4WD when it gets rugged. This trip is uniquely a 2 week trip without local flights, which does much to keep your footprint lower. Yet you are contributing to the local economy and local communities staying where possible at community guesthouses and otherwise at locally run smaller hotels.

You will enjoy two Tesfa treks – community owned tourism at its best and a totally low carbon existence. One in North Wollo along the escarpment that divides the Blue Nile and the Tekeze river systems,  and the other in Wof Washa on the Rift Valley escarpment where one of the largest forests is found within a few hours of Addis Ababa. You will stay in a community conservation area: Guassa Menz, whic his home to Ethiopian Wolves, Gelada Baboons and other afro alpine wildlife. You will visit Lake Tana with its hidden monasteries seeing where the Blue Nile flows out of this huge lake and stay at Mulu Ecolodge,  embedded with the community and low carbon. We will use simple hotels in some small towns where tourists do not often stay, and the more moderate locally owned hotels in the main towns too.

The current security situation doesn’t allow us to operate a road trip across Amhara Region.
