There has been an ongoing escalation of tensions in Tigray region since early 2026. There was some limited conflict in parts of Western Tigray / Welkite in late January.

In early February Flights were temporarily suspended to all Tigray airports and federal forces made several air strikes.

Tigray forces then pulled out of the areas they occupied in the west, flights resumed, however there was increasing tension in southern Tigray, particularly on the border with Afar.

The situation then improved, but as of mid April, the ruling party of Tigray has said that the peace accords from Nov 2022 have not been implemented and so they are no longer following the agreement. What this means for the coming weeks is very unclear. We can not be sure whether there will be further hostilities, but tensions have escalated to a new level.

Currently flights are operating, but owing to severe fuel shortages transport within Tigray is very difficult.

At this time travel to Tigray is not recommended.
