In the first week of October the conflict between Federal Ethiopian forces and Tigray regional forces has increased, and it seems that Eritrean forces have entered the conflict. Shelling, bombing and drone attacks have become frequent, especially in the northern part of Tigray region.

This upsurge in conflict began on 23 September when Tigray's airports (Mekele, Axum and Shire) were taken over by regional forces, and flights were suspended. At the same time the conflict began to escalate further, although there seems to have been very little in the way of fighting, with forces retreating when facing a larger force rather than trying to defend territory and more particularly towns.

Through out 2026 there has been a general escalation of tensions in Tigray region with some limited conflict in different parts of the region, and with some air and drone strikes.

Travel to Tigray is both difficult and really unsafe at this point.
