The Experience

Few journeys offer what Tigray does: a rare combination of staggering natural beauty, living history, and genuine human connection. This is a land where farmers still work fields overlooked by rock-hewn churches that are over a thousand years old, where cliff-face monasteries cling impossibly to sandstone escarpments, and where some of the most remarkable stone monuments ever raised by human hands rise from the dusty plains. Come here and you will encounter an Ethiopia that most travellers never see.

Highlights

  • Axum's Giant Obelisks — Stand beside the Great Stela, almost certainly the largest single monolith that any civilisation has ever attempted to erect. Weighing around 520 tonnes (compare that to Stonehenge's 5-tonne stones) and originally standing 33 metres tall, its ambition was almost too great — it is thought to have fallen during erection, its collapse smashing a nearby megalithic structure called Nefas Mewcha, whose central stone slab alone weighed 360 tonnes.

  • Ancient Tombs — Descend into burial chambers constructed from massive, irregularly shaped stone blocks, cut and fitted so precisely that a knife blade cannot be slipped between them.

  • The Ark of the Covenant — In the church compound at Axum stands a chapel said to house the Ark of the Covenant itself, guarded by a single dedicated priest. You can get remarkably close — though not quite to the gate, ever since one overenthusiastic visitor decided to vault the fence.

  • Sunset at the Quarries — Visit the hillside quarries where the great stelae were cut from the rock, and contemplate the sheer scale of what was achieved here — ideally with a drink in hand as the sun goes down.

  • Trekking in the Agame Mountains — Spend several days walking through the beautiful, little-visited Agame mountains, with their dramatic sandstone cliffs, hidden rock-hewn churches, and an ancient tunnel carved through the mountain many centuries ago. The walking ranges from moderate to challenging, and routes can be tailored to suit your pace and preference.

  • Village Life — Stay as genuine guests of local farming families, see inside their homes, and learn about agricultural traditions that have endured for generations. This is immersive, sustainable travel at its most rewarding.

  • Wildlife — Keep an eye out for Gelada baboons (the world's only grass-eating primate), Rock hyrax — curious creatures more closely related to elephants than to the rodents they resemble — and a rich variety of birds, including impressive raptors.

  • The Rock-Hewn Churches of Gheralta — Over 130 rock-hewn churches are scattered across the Gheralta region, ranging from those easily reached on foot to others perched on near-vertical cliff faces that will test your nerve and your legs in equal measure. Around a dozen of the most remarkable are reasonably accessible, and we will work with you to choose the combination that best fits your interests, fitness, and appetite for adventure. Our expert guide has rock climbing experience and carries ropes and harnesses for the more exposed approaches — so those who want to push themselves can do so safely, while those who prefer a less vertiginous experience will find no shortage of extraordinary churches within easy reach. Highlights may include Abuna Yemata Gah, the so-called Chapel in the Sky, and Abuna Gebre Mikael Koraro, renowned for its extraordinarily vivid blue paintings.

  • Gheralta Lodge — Unwind at the serene and beautiful Gheralta Lodge, one of the finest small lodges in northern Ethiopia.

The Journey

Axum is where your adventure begins. Flying into this ancient city — once ranked by the Prophet Mani alongside Rome, Persia, and China as one of the four great powers of the world — you will have two full days to explore its wonders. The towering obelisks, the underground tombs, the church compound scattered with stones bearing ancient Sabaean inscriptions, the ruins of the original Church of St Mary of Zion, and the chapel said to house the Ark of the Covenant: there is more than enough here to fill two rich days and leave you wanting more.

On your third day, head east towards the community trek, pausing en route to visit the ancient temple ruins at Yeha — Ethiopia's oldest standing structure — and to take in the beautiful Adwa mountains in the morning light. After a simple local lunch, your trek into the Agame Mountains begins: a less-visited and wonderfully rewarding mountain range just north of Gheralta, where sandstone cliffs glow red above green farmed valleys, and rock-hewn churches appear in the cliff faces around every corner. For three nights (extendable, should you wish to linger), you will walk, explore, and live alongside the communities who have called these mountains home for centuries.

From the Agame Mountains, a short transfer south brings you to Hawzen, your base for exploring the famous rock-hewn churches of the Gheralta. With over 130 churches in the region and around a dozen that are more readily accessible, there is no shortage of options — and no two visits need look the same. Some churches can be reached with a gentle walk through dramatic scenery; others demand a head for heights and a willingness to scramble up cliff faces with the help of ropes and an experienced guide. We tailor every itinerary to your preferences, so whether you are here for the art and history, the physical challenge, or both, we will put together the perfect programme. A week in these mountains would not be wasted — but even a couple of days will leave a deep impression.

Your journey ends with a final night at the Gheralta Lodge or a comfortable hotel in Hawzen, before transferring to Mekele to catch your flight back to Addis Ababa — carrying memories that, we suspect, will stay with you for a very long time.
